Who is Adult Catechesis for?
Christ the King’s Adult Catechesis is intended for a wide audience. This includes those who:
Have no religious back ground
Desire to join the confessional Lutheran Church from another Christian tradition
Have fallen from the Faith and desire to return
Have a non-Christian religious background
are members of the confessional Lutheran church and want to be refreshed on the Catechisms (if you have not taken a Catechism class in years or decades, it is worth considering going through again).
Please join us whether you are person:
who is curious about Christianity, the Church, and/or confessional Lutheranism, or
who desires to be baptized and/or confirmed into the Christian faith and enter into communion in the confessional Lutheran church.
What will be taught in Adult Catechesis?
Catechesis is the teaching of the basics of the Christian Faith from the Scriptures and as explained in the Small and Large Catechism of the Lutheran Church. The Adult Catechumen will also learn about the traditional Lutheran Church Year and the in’s and out’s of the Divine Service (Sunday worship).
When can I attend or join Adult Catechesis classes?
You can attend anytime! The class is scheduled so if a person attends classes and the Divine service from May 5 onward, they would be eligible to join the Church through baptism and/or confirmation at the next Vigil of Easter. Those who join the class later would work with the pastor to be baptized and/or confirmed sometime after the Vigil.
Who can I contact to register for the class before or after it begins?
You can contact Rev. McGinley at revmcginley@protonmail.com or contact Christ the King Lutheran Church at 712-262-2244. Registering for the class helps us ensure we will have materials available for you. But if you don’t register, please still come!
What books or materials will be used for Adult Catechesis?
Books used for the class are listed below with links. For people looking to become members, we will work to provide the books for you. For current members of CTK, we would encourage you to purchase the materials. And, finally, for those simply interested in learning but are not sure about joining, simply come to the class! We’ll have copies for you to view there.
If this feels like a lot of books - don’t worry! Pastor McGinley will guide you through them in class throughout the year.
The Books Used for Adult Catechesis:
NJKV Bible
Every lesson and suggested weekly readings are centered on the Word of God. For Adult Catechesis, we will be using the NKJV translation of the Scriptures.
The Small & Large Catechism of the Lutheran Church
The Small & Large Catechism have been used to teach the basics of the faith since they were penned by Martin Luther nearly 500 years ago. The Catechisms teach the faith in six chief parts: (1) The Ten Commandments, (2) The Creed, (3) The Lord’s Prayer, (4) Holy Baptism, (5) Confession of Sin & Office of the Keys, (6) The Sacrament of the Altar.
The Small and Large Catechisms can also be read for free here:
